As motorcycles have developed, so too has the method of transporting them from manufacturers to the importers or distributors. The vast majority of new motorcycles are delivered in wooden packing crates to the dealer's. The modern day new motorcycle crate is a cleverly designed wooden structure capable of carrying heavy motorcycles safely by land, sea or air transportation.
Purpose-Built Crates for Shipping a Motorcycle
So what does a new motorcycle packing crate have to do with classic bikes? It's all about transporting or shipping. Many classic bikes are purchased over the internet or from a seller who is located miles away from the buyer. Either way, the bike will require being shipped either (complete bike), or by a shipping company to its new home. Whether it was from Japan to New York or L ninja 250 fairing.A. to Atlanta, a bike properly secured in a purpose-built crate is more likely to get to its destination without damage.
Shipping Your Motorcycle Partly Disassembled
For a small fee, most dealers will be happy to sell one of their used crates. These crates will offer reasonable protection for the motorcycle during transportation. However, to keep the size and weight of crates to a minimum, new bikes are partly disassembled prior to shipping. Therefore, to place a classic bike inside one of these crates, the seller must undertake some disassembly, and prepare the bike for shipping.
First, to meet various transportation regulations, the bike must be shipped dry. That is, the battery must be removed, the fuel system must be empty (carbs and fuel tank), and the engine/gearbox oils must be drained.
To fit the bike properly inside a shipping crate, a number of items must be removed:
Steel Locating Brackets
With the bike partly disassembled, the next phase is to secure it into the crate. Most have a raised location for the front wheel spindle, with steel locating brackets. The shipper must refit the spindle into the forks then bolt the spindle to the raised support. The rear wheel will often sit into a slot between two pieces of wood (be sure to protect the tire at this point).
The loose items, including the front wheel, must be secured to the bike. Needless to say, all the loose items must be wrapped in bubble wrap to protect them during motorcycle shipping. No two components can be allowed to rub against each other. work well for securing loose items.
